Book Review of Tomorrow Died Yesterday

If you're familiar with Chimeka Garricks pen game, you would know that he is one of the best Nigerian writers out there.

I've had this book on my to-be-read list for a long while so I was really looking forward to reading it. The title may sound weird but reading the book would help you understand it better (people's future could end before it even began).

The book follows the lives of four friends who grew up in Asiama Town, Niger Delta. Fearless but reckless Doye, Innocent but sanctimonious Amaibi, Industrious Kaniye (I'll take not finding a less positive word to describe Kaniye as my personal bias) and friendly but cowardly Tubo.

My favourite character started out to be Tubo but ended up being Kaniye. This is interesting because in the author's note, Chimeka Garricks wrote and I quote "Kaniye appeal to the female readers of the manuscript was better than expected"

The book was set in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s of Niger Delta and it addressed issues like Niger Delta militants, Nigeria's military regime, Oil bunkering and kidnapping of expatriates. It also addressed bad governance and greedy leaders. Having read A Broken People's Playlist also written by Chimeka Garricks, Tomorrow died Yesterday increased my interest in Port-Harcourt (there were plenty times I craved Port-Harcourt's bole and fish😅😅). Also note that Deola and Kaniye were mentioned in the last story of A Broken People's Playlist.

I'm a believer of great friendships and Tomorrow died Yesterday showed how friendships change over the years. I also learnt that life is not just black and white, there are a lot of grey areas. I did not expect the book to end the way it did but I'd always admire authors who write tragedy so well.

Tomorrow died yesterday is a solid 10/10. I totally recommend. If you've read the book, I'd like to know your thoughts about it below.

P.S. I’m done with second year of medical school and I've been at home for a while now. I haven't done anything really special and sometimes I worry if I've become too comfortable but I've also realised that breaks are important and they help us recharge and think of new ideas. I'm definitely enjoying the days of no pressure🙃
